Creative Development
What is creative development? It's more that simply the Visual design of your web site, although that's an important part of it. Creative development involves different sorts of design to ensure that your project is easy to understand and use. The Information design process is all about making sure that your content is easy to navigate, maximising the communicative force of your material. Have you ever visited a web site or used a piece of technology where you couldn't figure out how to make it work? Chances are that the developers of those products didn't spend enough time on their Interaction design, which is a critical component of ensuring your site is easy to use.
IML designers and information architects are rightfully proud of their ability to turn the requirements and requests of a client into good looking products that are simple to use.

What is creative development?
When developing a web site, IML draws on the creative skills of its web team in information, interaction and visual design, and programming. Our approach to creative development goes beyond just choosing colours and making buttons. We aim build a user interface that is both functional and attractive, and provides the user with easy access to information.
Creative development does not happen in isolation. The creative development process will overlap to an extent with content development and technical development. Creative development includes three main stages: information design, interaction design and visual design.
Information design
Information design is the process through which the information you want to present on your web site is configured for most effective communication. In other words, information design helps make the information understandable and easy to access and use. We do this by incorporating into the design good-practice approaches to graphic design, typography, systems and usability.
Interaction design
Interaction design is the process of defining and developing the user's experience of a web site or other digital medium. Interaction design focuses on interactive elements such as navigation, layout and user interactions.
Part of the interaction design process may be production of an Electronic Proof of Concept (EPOC), particularly if the web site is complex or highly interactive.
Visual design
IML's visual designers create a graphic 'look and feel' for each web site. The look and feel we develop takes into account:
- the site's function
- the audience(s)
- required elements and guidelines (ie. colours, typeface, photography, diagrams, logos, etc.)
- technical constraints
- any other information that will help us to visualise the site (eg. your preferences, your history and our own visual research)
IML has been intimately involved in the development of the UTS "New Look" for UTSWeb and for the many UTS faculties, schools and units that require web sites that reflect both their UTS identity and their individual styles and activities. The UTS Web Publishing Guidelines (currently under review) provide guidance for those who want to create web pages for a UTS entity. Please contact us for further information.
