With GradeMark an instructor is able to edit and grade student assignments online. The instructor can add comments within the body of the assignment, point out grammar and punctuation mistakes, assess the student’s performance within the class and enter a grade for the assignment.
How to give an assignment a mark
Note: Turnitin will accept only a numeric mark. Grades such as P, C, H cannot be entered here. Feedback and comments can still be made on an assignment, even if a numeric grade is not entered here.
- In the Control Panel, under Course Tools, click Turnitin Assignments (or Turnitin Assignments by Groups, if you want to access a group assignment).
- On the Turnitin Assignments page, select the relevant assignment.
- On the Assignment Inbox page, click on the Title of the Assignment you want to grade.

- At the top right of the assignment page, a Grade field is displayed with a double hypen.

- Click inside the Grade field and type the mark. This mark is also saved to the Grade Centre and will display there.
- To edit a mark, click the original mark and changing it as necessary.
Providing written feedback and comments to students
Instructors can use GradeMark to add comments to students' submissions. Adding comments to an assignment in GradeMark is as easy as clicking where you would like to add the comment, entering your text and clicking Save.
Instructors can use the following types of comments to provide feedback when assessing student assignments.
These include:
- Inline comments up to 1000 characters long allow instructors to add marks directly onto the paper. The inline comment appears as type overlaid on the paper.
- General comments tool allows for a longer, less area-specific feedback to be provided to the student.
- QuickMark comments are commonly used or standard editing marks that instructors can utilise when editing and grading papers. These relate to composition, format, punctuation and usage.
- Create your own QuickMark comments.
To add comments:
- On the Assignment Inbox page, click on the Grade icon for the assignment that you are marking.

Note: If you are using the Turnitin by Groups page, you will firstly need to select your group. The Grade icon is not available on the groups page. Instead select the title of the assignment that you are marking, then select the GradeMark option on the top left of the assignment page

- Click inside the assignment document to open the comment bubble.
- Enter text into the text field of the comment bubble.

- Click Save.
- If you would like to make this comment into a reusable QuickMark comment, click on the More Options button.
- Enter a title for the QuickMark. This will be displayed on the assignment.
- Click Save.

- The comment bubble will be added to the assignment document.
Providing audio feedback and comments to students
Instructors can use GradeMark to record and add a voice comment as general feedback on a student's assignment. The length of the recording is limited to 3 minutes. The following video summarises audio feedback:
