Standard Assignments

Assignments allow you to create an area where students will find information about each assignment in your subject and where they can then electronically submit their work. As an instructor, you will be able to view and download student assignments and electronically return grades and feedback to students.

In UTSOnline there are two types of Assignments areas you can add to your subject: a standard Assignment or a Turnitin Assignment. The differences between these two assignments are described on the Assignment page. The following instructions relate to adding a standard Assignment submissions area to your subject.

Assignments can be set up for each student individually or for groups of students to collaborate on.

How to create an individual assignment

  1. Set Edit Mode ON, then create or access the Content Area where you will create the Assignment.

Hint: Not sure what a content area is? See the Adding & Organising Materials page.

  2. On the Action Bar, point to Create Assessment to access the drop-down list. Select Assignment.

    Create Assessment

  3. On the Create Assignment page, type a Name for your assignment and in the Instructions text box, type instructions for the Assignment. You can format the text of your instructions and add images, links, files and multimedia using the functions in the Text Editor, if needed.
  4. If you have assignment guidelines, marking criteria or other resources for students related to the assignment you can attach these files under Assignment Files using Browse My Computer.

Hint: Do you have more than two or three resources for this assignment? Consider placing these in a separate content folder such as in Example 2

  5. Under Grading, enter the number of Points Possible that students can achieve. This must be a mark (i.e. a numeric grade) however you can use the grade centre to display this as a UTS grade to students.
  6. Under Availability, indicate whether the assignment is to be made available, how many attempts students may make at this assignment, any availability restrictions, and whether you want to Track Number of Views.

    Assignment Availability

Note: Students will NOT see the assignment if you have not checked the box Make the Assignment Available.

  7. Optionally under Due Dates, select a Due Date.
  8. In the Recipients section, select the All Students Individually option.
  9. Click Submit.

Note: The assignment displays as the last item on the content page, you can drag it to a higher position on the page if you need to.

  10. You can Preview the Assignment by clicking on the title of the Assignment in the content area. This opens a preview of the Upload Assignment page where a student would normally upload and submit their assignment.

Hint: Want to view this assignment as a student? Then login using your Student Test Account and you will be able to submit an assignment.

  11. You can Edit an Assignment by clicking on the item's Options to access the drop-down list. Select Edit.

How to create a group assignment

You can create a single assignment and assign it to all groups, or create several unique assignments and assign them to individual groups. Only the instructor and the members in the group have access to the assignment.

Each group submits one collaborative assignment and all members receive the same grade and feedback.

The overall grade for the assignment can appear to users as a numeric value, letter grade, percentage, text, or as complete/incomplete, depending upon the Primary Display choice for the column created in the Grade Centre for the assignment.

Note: A grade column is automatically created in the Grade Centre for Group Assignments.

To setup the group assignment:

  1. Make sure that you have set up the group before you create the assignment. If you haven't yet set up the group, follow the instructions under Groups.
  2. Repeat Steps 1 to 7 above under How to Create an Individual Assignment.
  3. In the Recipients section, select the Groups of Students option.
