Inductions for Casual Academics

To assist you with getting started as a casual employee of UTS, the Human Resources Unit has a casual academic staff page that includes links to online induction information.

Practical and Faculty information for casuals

The casual academics' website contains practical information for casual academics and relevant news and events, along with links to Faculty contacts and HR pages.

Learning and Teaching development for casuals

New casual academics are invited to participate in sessions on learning and teaching issues in the IML orientation sessions for newly appointed academic staff. These are run at the start of each semester (mid February and mid July).

IML runs Faculty-based workshops for casuals by request, usually towards the beginning of semester. Casuals are informed about these workshops by their Faculty. Typical workshops focus on topics such as Tutorial interaction, Assessment, Groupwork, Student learning or Facilitating online learning.

Workshops or discussion sessions can also be facilitated for course or large subject teams including casual and full-time academics. If you would like to request a workshop on a particular topic, please discuss this with your Subject or Course Co-ordinator or Head of School or the Associate Dean Teaching and Learning in your Faculty.

Casual academics are welcome to participate in the two core subjects of the Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Teaching and Learning, without having to formally enrol in the course:

  1. Student learning and teaching approaches:
  2. Course design and assessment

The dates and times of these sessions are on the subjects and key dates page for the course. Contact Enza.Mirabella@uts.edu.au if you are interested in participating.

Casuals may formally enrol in the course if they can confirm that they will have teaching commitments during their enrolment.  Sponsorship of fees may be available for longstanding casuals.

This IML website includes a range of online resources and materials which are relevant to casual academics
