In December 2002, the Australian Universities Teaching Committee (AUTC) sponsored a major international conference focussing on the subject of reusability of learning resources which have been developed using information and communication technologies.
The particular focus of this conference was to disseminate the outcomes of AUTC-funded project Information and Communication Technologies for Flexible Learning. The outcomes of this project include a series of reusable learning designs in the form of templates which will enable academics to create high quality, flexible learning experiences for students.
Four leading international keynote speakers provided perspectives on the ways in which recent developments in Reusable Learning Objects will complement these developments.

In the afternoon of the conference, participants worked in small groups to respond to four questions:
a) What would it take for you to reuse a learning design and/or learning object developed elsewhere? Ie what features would it need to have? For example:
- what size should it be (whole subject vs illustration of a single topic)
b) Would your considerations be different depending on whether it is a reusable learning design, or whether it is a learning object such as an animation or a piece of text?
c) In the light of this, how would you recommend that developers of reusable learning designs and learning objects maximise their potential for re-use in your context?
d) What would it take for you to submit a learning design/ learning object for use by others?
Note that the emphasis of the conference was on teaching and learning and related policy issues associated with the topic of re-useability, rather than on technical issues.
