Thank you for considering contributing to the ATN Assessment Conference 2010! There are a variety of ways in which you can contribute and help make this conference a rewarding experience for everyone.
The overarching conference theme of Assessment: Sustainability, Diversity and Innovation is an opportunity to explore research and scholarly practice in designing, implementing and supporting innovative and enduring assessment for students and teachers in higher education institutions. This theme includes the following four strands:
- Assessment for sustainable learning within and beyond the course
- Sustainable assessment practices and standards
- Innovative assessment: opportunities and challenges
- Diversity and assessment: diverse students and diverse assessment practices.
Each contribution needs to address one or more of these aspects of assessment. For a full description of each theme please refer to Conference Themes.
Below you will find details of the format and submission requirements for full papers (for peer review), and short papers, posters and workshops (peer review of an extended abstract only). Authors of papers for peer review will find it helpful to refer to the Guidelines for Reviewers (PDF 90KB). The conference is utilising an online submission system to manage submissions of abstracts and full papers. Following submission of your extended abstract or full paper (by 4 August 2010) you will receive an email from the Conference Conveners accepting or declining your submission. Contribution Types
The Conference Program Committee will consider both peer reviewed and non peer reviewed contributions in the form of:
- Full Papers (double-blind peer reviewed)
- Short Papers (non-refereed)
- Workshops
- Posters
Proposed contributions will be submitted in the form of either full papers or, in the case of other submission types, as extended abstracts. Specific details for each type of contribution follow below. Both forms of submission also require short abstracts for the conference program. All submissions will close on 4 August 2010 at 11.00pm Eastern Standard Time (EST).
Full Papers (refereed)
Refereed papers describe and contextualise innovative and scholarly research and practice and and will be included in the published conference proceedings:
- Full Papers should be of a maximum of 5,000 words in length.
- This document outlines the Format Requirements for Papers (Microsoft Word .doc, 35KB).
- These criteria are used to review the Full Papers:
- Relevance to conference themes and intended audience
- Academic merit, including appropriate level of scholarship, originality and use of relevant literature.
- Clear and coherent description of aims and background, methodology or evaluation processes, findings and conclusions.
- Implications for theory, practice and/or policy.
- Standard of academic writing and presentation.
- Authors are advised to read the Guidelines for Reviewers (PDF 90KB) document to understand how their paper will be rated.
- Full Papers for peer review also require a 250 word Program Abstract to be submitted at the same time.
- Submit the Full Paper and Program Abstract for review using the online submission system for Full Papers (Abstract Warehouse 177) by 4 August 2010 at 11.00pm EST.
- This submission needs to be de-identified to ensure that the paper meets the requirements of a blind review (see Ensuring a blind review below).
- Completed reviews will be sent back to authors by DATE 16 September 2010 for revision and final editing as required.
- Revised papers must be received no later than 30 September 2010 5.00pm EST to be included in the published conference proceedings.
- Refereed papers will be allocated 30 minutes for presentation and discussion and authors will be advised of presentation times by 30 October 2010.
Short Papers (non-refereed)
Non-refereed papers may include scholarly case studies of innovative practice, research in progress or preliminary research findings. After the conference, papers can be revised and submitted for non-refereed publication on the conference website, subject to meeting presentation standards:
- Short Papers are to be submitted as an Extended Abstract of 500 - 1000 words and these have specific requirements. This is the document that outlines the requirements for Extended Abstracts.
- These criteria are used to review Extended Abstracts for Short Papers:
- Relevance to conference themes and intended audience
- Appropriate level of scholarship, including use of relevant literature
- Clear and coherent description of the practice or research progress and findings
- Implications for theory, practice and/or policy.
- Short Paper submissions also require a 250 word Program Abstract to be submitted at the same time.
- Submit the Extended Abstract AND your Program Abstract for review using the online submission system for Short Papers (Abstract Warehouse 179) by 4 August 2010 at 11.00pm EST.
- Completed reviews will be sent back to authors by DATE 17 September 2010 for revision and final editing as required.
- Prepare your paper. Short Papers should be a maximum of 3,000 words in length. This document outlines the Format Requirements for Papers (Microsoft Word .doc, 35KB).
- Prepare your presentation for the conference.
- Authors will be advised of their presentation times by 30 October 2010.
- Following the conference, authors may submit the revised paper for publication on the conference website. Short Papers will be published on the site subject to meeting appropriate scholarly standards of writing and presentation.
Workshops
Workshops are intended to enable participants to actively interact and participate to more fully engage with a topic. Intending workshop facilitators who wish to use the workshop to gain feedback on projects in progress should consider how participants can gain outcomes for their own thinking and practice. Typically workshops for the conference will have been conducted successfully at the facilitator’s own institution. After the conference, Extended Abstracts can be revised and submitted as summaries for non-refereed publication on the conference website, subject to meeting presentation standards:
- Submissions for Workshops consist of an Extended Abstract of 500 - 1000 words and these have specific requirements. This is the document that outlines the requirements for Extended Abstracts.
- These criteria are used to review Extended Abstracts for Workshops:
- Relevance to conference themes and intended audience
- Appropriate level of scholarship, including use of relevant literature
- Clear and coherent description of the workshop aims, methods for actively involving participants and intended outcomes for participants
- Implications for theory, practice and/or policy.
- Workshop submissions also require a 250 word Program Abstract to be submitted at the same time.
- Submit the Extended Abstract AND your Program Abstract for review using the online submission system for Workshops (Abstract Warehouse 179) by 4 August 2010 at 11.00pm EST.
- This document outlines the Workshop Requirements and Guidelines (PDF 50KB) for the conference workshop session.
- Completed reviews will be sent back to organisers and facilitators by DATE 17 September 2010 for revision and editing as required.
- Organisers and facilitators will be advised of their workshop times in the program by 30 October 2010.
- Following the conference, authors may submit a revised Extended Abstract as a summary, for publication on the conference website. Summaries will be published on the site subject to meeting appropriate scholarly standards of writing and presentation.
Posters
The posters are seen as a vital and dynamic component of the conference, allowing for the dissemination of new and topical research, innovations and practices and providing a wonderful networking opportunity. Posters will be centrally placed in the key conference breakout zones. A period in the program will be assigned when participants know they can make contact with you and posters will be actively promoted at the conference. A panel will review all those displayed (non ALTC) and award a prize for best poster. After the conference, Extended Abstracts may be revised and submitted as summaries for non-refereed publication on the conference website, subject to meeting presentation standards:
- Submissions for Posters consist of an Extended Abstract of 500 - 1000 words and these have specific requirements. This is the document that outlines the requirements for Extended Abstracts.
- These criteria are used to review Extended Abstracts for Posters:
- Relevance to conference themes and intended audience
- Appropriate level of scholarship, including use of relevant literature
- Clear description of the practice, innovation or work in progress
- Implications for theory, practice and/or policy.
- Poster submissions also require a 250 word Program Abstract to be submitted at the same time.
- Submit the Extended Abstract AND your Program Abstract for review on the online submission system for Posters (Abstract Warehouse 179) by 4 August 2010 at 11.00pm EST.
- This document outlines the Poster Requirements and Guidelines (MS Word 105KB) for presentation at the conference.
- Completed reviews will be sent back to presenters by DATE 17 September 2010 for revision and final editing as required.
- Presenters will be advised of their poster times in the program by 30 October 2010.
- Following the conference, authors may submit a revised Extended Abstract as a summary, for publication on the conference website. Summaries will be published on the site subject to meeting appropriate scholarly standards of writing and presentation.
Requirements for Abstracts
Extended Abstracts
All Short Papers, Workshops and Posters require an Extended Abstracts of 500 - 1000 words to be submitted for consideration by reviewers.
Authors of extended abstracts for short papers or posters are advised to include the following in their submission:
- Background and aims
- Methodology or Description of the practice and evaluation methods
- Findings and/or next steps
- Conclusions and implications for theory, practice and/or policy.
Authors of extended abstracts for workshops are advised to include the following in their submission:
- Background and aims
- Description of the workshop focus; for example, ideas, practices, project or innovation
- Workshop activities and intended outcomes for participants
- Implications for theory, practice and/or policy.
The Extended Abstracts are submitted to the reviewers via the online submission system for Short Papers, Workshops and Posters.
For publication on the website after the conference of revised Short Papers and Workshop or Poster summaries please refer to the Format Requirements for Papers (Microsoft Word .doc, 35KB).
Program Abstracts
All contributors should also prepare and submit a brief 250 word summary abstract for inclusion in the Conference Program. This needs to be included with your submission to the reviewers via the online submission system for Short Papers, Workshops, and Posters.
Ensuring a blind review
The following applies only to full papers submitted for blind review: To ensure the integrity of the blind peer review process, every effort should be made to prevent the identities of the authors and reviewers from being known to each other. This involves the authors, editors and reviewers (who upload documents as part of their review) checking to see if the following steps have been taken with regard to the text and the file properties:
- The authors of the document have deleted their names from the text, with “Author” and year used in the references and footnotes, instead of the authors’ name, article title etc.
- With Microsoft Office documents, author identification should also be removed from the properties for the file (see under File in Word), by clicking on the following, beginning with File on the main menu of the Microsoft application: File > Save As > Tools (or Options with a Mac) > Security > Remove personal information from the file properties on save > Save.
- The institution name(s) have been removed and replaced with institution 1, institution 2 etc.
Submission process
An author for each contribution will need to submit a Full Paper or Extended Abstract AND a Program Abstract for each submission. To submit you will proceed online submission system.
All successful contributors will also need to register for the conference using online registration by 8 October for the Early Bird rate.
Editing your submission
Prior to the August 4 deadline, you may re-enter the contributions system to edit or amend each draft submission until you have selected Finalise Submission. When you log on to the system you will need to select the correct Abstract Warehouse for the submission - either Abstract Warehouse 177 for Full Papers OR Abstract Warehouse 179 for Short Papers, Workshops and Posters. If you have already submitted an article, you need to find it in the appropriate Abstract Warehouse. When you select "Article List" only articles for that Abstract Warehouse will appear. For example, if you have made both a Full Paper and a Workshop submission, you will see the Full Paper in Abstract Warehouse 177, and the Workshop in Abstract Warehouse 179.
